Bread machine: Can I add the yeast to the other ingredients, instead of the dispenser?
My Panasonic bread machine has a yeast dispenser that quit working. Can I just add the yeast to the other ingredients? (I would put on top of flour, away from liquid) My concern is that there is a pre-kneading stage (mixing), then a long rest, then another kneading. Would the yeast be activated too early?
I suspect it should work. When you add the yeast, just make sure you put the yeast away from the salt. I have a bread maker that had me add everything up front in with the liquid first, the flour 2nd, the salt on the left and the yeast on the right (both on top of the flour). If fat like oil is part of the recipe, its added with the liquid up front.
I bake more bread by hand then by machine but I still generally follow that practice
